Future University – Edge Zones

I’ve been thinking a bit about the future of the university, and it seems to me that a new model may be emerging, one that has something of the traditional sanctuary of a place of learning, but that innovatively engages communities, both local and international. There will, of course, have to be those preserves where students and teachers can contemplate their experience and learn together, but there must also be what, for the moment, one might think of as an edge zone where interactions of many kinds might take place.

Four Fundamentals of Workplace Strategy

There are four fundamentals of workplace strategy: Alignment; Effectiveness; Efficiency; and Agility. These are core objectives for all successful workplaces. Each may be prioritized differently depending of the needs of individual organizations. Credit for  thinking and theorizing about these is due to our colleague, Jan Johnson of Allsteel. We find that each one of these fundamentals applies directly to our workplace strategy practice and the implementation of good workplace design.

Alignment.

It is a primary objective to clearly link workplace to business strategies and goals. The design and management of workplaces must be in sync with business conditions, culture, and initiatives.

Effectiveness.

Productivity is the competitive advantage and life blood of most every business. As more businesses pursue innovation and promote collaboration, improvements to workplace settings need to support both individual and group spaces.

Efficiency.

We all are trying to find ways to do more with less. This is equally true of space utilization and the number of hours in a work day. Configuration of work settings, aggregation of work activities and improved workflow each contribute to higher yield and better support productivity.

Agility.

The flip side to alignment is the ability to rapidly adapt to changing business conditions and increased competition. Change is a constant and flexibility in the arrangement of work settings is necessary to respond to emerging work styles.

Organizations should consider each of these fundamentals when thinking about improving their workplace. A successful workplace is an asset and a strategic investment which requires attention and ongoing management.
